West End Magic

New year, new website, and I’m talking about my upcoming show, the first of the year – West End Magic, at the my hometown theatre in Southend. Excited is the word!!!

West End Magic began in 2007 at the Albany Theatre in Deptford. The idea for the show all started with a group of keen young magicians, calling ourselves The Demon Club. For 15 years we would meet weekly at Davenports magic shop, creating card tricks and perfecting illusions.

Over time we magicians created shows to perform to the public and to the Magic Circle. We disbanded in 1997 but strong friendships remained and 10 years later some of the original members re-formed for ‘A Night of Magic’ in 2007. The show went on to the New Players Theatre in Charing Cross and later evolved into West End Magic. It now has a permanent home at the Leicester Square Theatre, a stone’s throw from the theatres which used to house Houdini and Chung Ling Soo in the early 1900’s during magic’s golden heyday.

This was a pipe dream that’s become so much more than I ever expected.

13 years later the show has now established itself as London’s longest running theatre magic show, returning magic regularly to the West End. In addition to having a permanent fixture in London’s theatre calendar, it has now expanded and tours theatres and venues around the country. This year we are embarking on our 3rd nationwide tour.

We feature various magic and variety acts from all over the UK, including some bloke called Oliver Tabor performing his extraordinary illusions, making you wonder whether reality really can be bent and manipulated.
Wayne Trice acts as compère and host, and attempts to escape from his suit jacket. There’s fairytale illusions from the Glamourists; Vicky Butterfly & that Oliver Tabor bloke again.
Each show features a selection of the best magic and variety acts, chosen from the local area to each theatre.

I’ve mentioned that the first show of the year is at the Palace Theatre in Southend, which is exciting not just because it’s my local theatre but also because I get the chance to invite local performers and friends such as Magic Dave to be on the show. Magic Dave is the leading family entertainer in the local area who also has his own touring show ‘Magic Dave & Friends’.  The Southend show will also feature one of the best variety acts in the world, gentleman juggler, showman and impossibilist Mat Ricardo. Mat displays THE BEST trick with a yo-yo. You have been warned.

Our West End Magic show is created for everyone to enjoy – adults, children, mums, dads, grandmas, granddads, uncles, aunties, nieces, nephews, friends and strangers.
Expect a bit of everything with all types of magic and illusion thrown in, from sleight of hand card tricks to grand illusion, mind reading, comedy, juggling and more.

For those who haven’t visited, The Palace Theatre is a beautiful Victorian theatre designed by architect Frank Matcham. He’s also known for building iconic venues such as the London Palladium and Coliseum. Plus he lived in Southend-on-sea so it’s a very special place.

I really cannot wait for this show, you can’t ask for a better way to start the year, excitement doesn’t even cover it! I really do believe in dreams coming true.
